Families who want to minimize chemical exposure for their children & grandchildren have discovered that plastic is not a healthy kid-friendly choice. But what substitutions are truly safe?
Why Is Silicone A Safe Choice?
While not a “100% natural” material like rubber, food-grade silicone is a non-toxic polymer mostly made from silica (sand). It can withstand heating and freezing without leaching or off-gassing, hazardous chemicals – unlike plastics, which contaminate food in these environments. It is also odour- and stain-resistant, hypoallergenic, and because of its smooth surface, very easy to clean. For these reasons, and because it is soft life rubber and does not break, it is the perfect material for eco-friendly and non-toxic baby products in particular.
What Brand Do You Recommend?
We have entered the golden age of silicone kids products – as I come across new, and clever silicone-based designs every day. Currently, at Thistle & Roo, we are super impressed with We Might Be Tiny's adorable range of silicone placemats. They truly are a practical and versatile buy.
We use our placemat every day for our 2-year-old during all meal times, snacks, going to restaurants, holidays (chuck in your suitcase), picnics, baking, play-doh, drawing and messy play - it protects furniture. We are personally very impressed with how easy the mat is to clean and how it always looks so new after a quick wipe! #parentingwin Check out our gorgeous collection here.
